This live football broadcast at Pasadena City College marked a significant milestone in my growth as a media producer. During the production, I was assigned to operate the on-screen graphics system, responsible for real-time score updates, lower thirds, and timing elements while the game was underway.
Up to this point, I had often worked as a production assistant, a role I deeply respect and that teaches humility, situational awareness, and teamwork. For this broadcast, however, I was entrusted with a more technically demanding role: learning a new graphics system quickly and executing under live-broadcast conditions.
Running graphics demanded constant focus and coordination with the director, camera operators, and announcers. There was no pause button. Every update had to be accurate, timely, and aligned with the game’s flow. The experience pushed me to adapt fast, stay calm under pressure, and trust my instincts while learning a new tool in real time.
What stood out most was the sense of being “lifted” into a role with greater responsibility, not as a departure from teamwork, but a continuation of it. It reinforced my belief that growth in media production comes from being willing to learn new systems, accept feedback, and step confidently into unfamiliar roles when the moment calls for it.
This experience reflects the broader trajectory of my education: developing a range of skills across audio, video, live production, and technical coordination, and learning how each role contributes to the success of a live broadcast. It remains one of the most rewarding hands-on learning experiences in my production work to date.
